Fern Ridge Policing District: Long-term Project
Last time KUGN hosted Sid, he took the opportunity to talk about the short and long-term issues surrounding the Fern Ridge Policing District. For months now, there has been a conversation ongoing between the community around Fern Ridge Reservoir, outside of Eugene, about how the funding of local policing should be handled. There was a strong push for the Lane County Commissioners to recommend a local policing district to the ballot this year. After public comments showed that there may be lack of support from the community, the Commissioners decided to shelve the idea for this year. Sid reminded us that when he was the mayor of Springfield, the funding for the new municipal jail took 8 years to pass from the first discussions in 1998 (when he was a city councilor) to the final piece of funding in 2006.
While the commissioners aren’t meeting for a couple weeks, Sid predicts that this discussion will resume in March. There is an opening to discuss how public safety is funded both in communities like Fern Ridge and across the county. As always, public input is the primary component in deciding the future direction of funding as the county faces the prospect of future shortfalls due to the ending of “Secure Rural Schools” and no short-term solutions to increase lumber production from state lands.
